In Homer’s Illiad, Hypnos lives on a dream-like island in cave that was surround by flowers. These flowers are described as soporific flowers, or flowers that cause sleepiness. I think I felt like this was a lovely way to think of my depression. Instead of some dark and ugly thing I don’t want to face, I can look at it as a cave I hide away in and sleep in surrounded by flowers until I am ready to emerge. I don’t like the pervasive language that depression is bad. No, making people feel bad about their depression is bad. Stay alight and do your best in that moment, in that day, in that week. Even if it’s getting out of bed. That is enough.
